BELLFLOWER

Ugly pile of crap. Just because you can make a movie, doesn't mean you should. Terrible.

THE WARRIOR'S WAY

1/13/2012

Fantasy, Western, Martial Art saga of a swordsman, a baby, a decrepit town of circus freaks, misfits and miscreants. Heavy use of effects, decent cast; including Geoffrey Rush, Kate Bosworth & Dong-Gun Jan. Cool, violent, but sweet and occasionally funny!

HIGHER GROUND

Vera Farmiga found the perfect script to star and direct. She's awesome in this adaptation of a novel about a woman's faith and family. She should find a film to co-star with Ryan Gosling.... Together they would kill!

In search of all things Gosling; go back to 2003 for great performances in an atypical drama.

WARRIOR

Great poster, mediocre movie. The mixed martial arts fight scenes are good. Love Nick Nolte, but the family turmoil feels manufactured, and I didn't fall in love with any of the characters.

TABLOID

1/6/2012

Errol Morris (The Fog of War) specializes in subject driven documentaries.  A self-absorbed "beauty" becomes obsessed with an average Mormon dude, and a media frenzy ensues. Kinky.

Erik Larson's dense historical account of the 1893 World's Fair in Chicago, and a psycho killer just blocks from it's entrance will be very challenging to adapt to the big screen because there is no clear opponent to the main character until the very end of the story. Love DiCaprio, but If only Ryan Gosling were to be cast as Dr. H. H. Holmes! Promising addition to the Steampunk genre.

Deepa Metha's follow-up's to Fire (1996). Earth dramatizes the 1947 cataclysmic split of India into two nations, and Water shares the suffering of an eight year-old widow in the same era. Known as the Elements Trilogy, these three films examine social issues and taboo topics.

Griftopia

Griftopia: bubble machines, vampire squids, and the long con that is breaking America, by Matt Taibbi. Read it if you want a clear understanding of what's happened to our nation and why we're in this awful mess.
