CEDAR RAPIDS

7/20/2011

How long is this Man-Child obsession going to last? And in how many movies will Ed Helms  portray a character in a doomed relationship who falls in love with a blond prostitute? Not many laugh out loud moments, a slight quirky film with John C. Reilly: so therefore you must see it.

RANGO

Not just for kids, and not for the very young uns. Violent funny western. Great, all the way around: Roger Deakins my favorite DP advised on the lighting.

If I knew more about Thai culture this movie might make more sense. It's a beautiful, mysterious, strange yet realistic ghost story about life, death, and previous lives. Deserves a second look. Shot on 16mm film.

THE LINCOLN LAWYER

7/14/2011

Routine yet engaging adaptation of a Michael Connelly novel. Matthew McConaughey's well cast in this role as an L.A. criminal defense attorney with a southern drawl. The characters are interesting, the tension builds and ultimately pays-off despite the egregious camera zooms.

Slight delay in movie notes as I'm reading Physics of the Future: How Science Will Shape Human Destiny and Our Daily Lives by the Year 2100 by Michio Kaku.

Pre-Code drama starring Barbra Stanwyck as an ambitious beauty who after a rough start in life followed by a rousing lecture on Nietzche "sleeps" her way to the top. Loved it!

Miss the political incorrectness of the '70s? Feeling nostalgic for the dawn of sketch comedy satires? This nascent groundbreaking comedy from Jim Abrahams, David and Jerry Zucker will either introduce you to the dawn of a sub-genre, or provide a welcome flashback.

Nicholas Ray's film noir starts as a gritty police procedural and evolves out of the darkness into  the end of the film noir era. Tough characters, hard boiled dialogue, and great performances by Robert Ryan and Ida Lupino. Short, tight, moving.
