ZERO DARK THIRTY

03/31/2013

Yeah, it's good. (Wish I was Kathy Bigelow...)

HOUSE OF CARDS

03/07/2013

Netfilx "original" political drama series. Kevin Spacey at his Southern-style smarmy best, and Robin Wright is perfect.  It's good.

BROTHERHOOD (2006)

02/06/2013

Violent, Showtime, family / gangster / political drama, set in Providence, Rhode Island, which lasted three seasons. The writing, acting, characters and performances: outstanding. Loved it.

ARGO

01/04/2013

Ben Affleck was in danger of being eclipsed by cohort Matt Damon, but Argo helps even out their career trajectories. Mr. Affleck has taken a page out of Robert Mitchem's book and does very little acting, and it really works for him! Love the suspense; the era was beautifully reproduced, my favorite film of 2012, so far...

Next destination on our time warp European Vacation are the gorgeous locations of this taut police procedural assassination thriller. Director Fred Zinnenmann adapts Frederick Forsyth's novel. It's so cool: loved it.

Long, (six hours) beautiful, Italian, multi-decade saga about a family with two brothers on divergent paths, and the women in their lives; including a mental patient, (pictured) a member of the Red Brigades, a librarian/photographer, a judge, a school teacher/mother and a young daughter (who takes fencing lessons.) Loved it!

French spy thriller dramatizing the events that lead up to the fall of the Soviet Union. HIstorically accurate? Perhaps not. Entertaining? absolutely.

THE CONQUEST

05/28/2012

The rise of Nicolas Sarkozy, and the decline of his marriage is dramatized in this engaging, heavily subtitled, and often humorous political drama. Great performance by Denis Podalydès.

THE IDES OF MARCH

01/20/2012

Entertaining, subdued political drama, but the question is: why are women relegated to the roles of pesky reporter and sexy intern? No film needs both Philip Seymour Hoffman and Paul  Giamatti. Would have been better with more females. Ryan Gosling and George Clooney are fabulous as usual.

EVEN THE RAIN

05/25/2011

The Global Water Crisis is dramatized in this Spanish film-in-a-film set in Bolivia. Artfully woven story of Christopher Columbus's impact on the native people, the struggles of the the visiting film makers, and the local actors fighting for water and survival.
