LIFE, ABOVE ALL

Based on the novel, Chanda's Secrets, this heartfelt drama illustrates the AIDS pandemic's impact on a humble South African family, and possibly an entire continent. Sad, but not brutal.

INCENDIES

11/20/2011

Loved the tough Mom's story but the pay-off seems hard to fathom. It's long, too. Great performance by Lubna Azabal. Two tracks from Radiohead. Why the giant red titles?

Award winning beautiful but long family drama from Danish director Susanne Bier on the topics of fatherhood, responsibility, violence, revenge and forgiveness. Outstanding acting, music, cinematography and performances.

As Josef von Sternberg had Marlene Dietrich, Yimou Zhang had Gong Li. This film has it all; story with depth, beauty, 1930's Shanghai gangsters, great performances. If you're unfamiliar with the work of Yimou Zhang Shanghai Triad is a great place to start!

My dad served in the Korean War, and after watching Tae Guk Gi (the South Korean flag) I understand why he refused to talk about it. What a mess... Engaging, violent story of two brothers and a nation torn apart by war. Lots of horrific battle scenes. Too many cuts, but one of best, if not the only film I've seen on the subject.

THE GREEN HORNET

6/17/2011

Jay Chou isn't bad ass enough to be Kato, Christoph Waltz's role is under-developed, and Seth Rogan is still Seth Rogan. There's a few laughs. Michel Gondry succeeds in elevating the script above the average bromance humor action film. Sony did the rest: over 230 million worldwide.

INSIDE JOB

5/20/2011

Prepare to be outraged by this essential documentary about the recent global financial collapse / rip-off caused by corrupt economists, greedy bankers and their Washington lackeys. (All male, by the way. Thanks guys...)

THE ILLUSIONIST

5/10/2011

Jacques Tati's screenplay is adapted and directed by The Triplets of Bellville creator and the result is a beautifully crafted yet emotionally distant film. A lovely work of art. It's refreshing to watch a film without dialogue or close-ups, true to Tati in style, and only 80 minutes long.

GET LOW

3/2/2011

Hard to believe that this is the first collaboration between Sissy Spacek and Robert Duvall: two of our favorite actors. Beautifully photographed period piece that delivers fine acting, solid well-balanced story, and lots of lovely wood and scenery.
