One of the saddest chapters in modern human history, the Rape of Nanking, in black and white. A simultaneously horrible and beautiful testament to the depravity of war.
Official Site: http://www.cityoflifeanddeath.co.uk/ Strong nationalist theme, heavily processed, ice-cold action packed fantasy. The slimmed-down character VFX is ridiculously inconsistent and distracting. I kept thinking the Red Skull was played by Kevin Bacon...
Official Site: http://captainamerica.marvel.com/ Anglophiles and gangster film aficionados rejoice; the Brothers Kray, and the women in their violent, criminal lives are finally available for your streaming device. More old school than modern. Not perfect, but still fascinating.
Maria Bello is a beauty, and an amazing actress in this sad story about the parents of a young mass murderer. If you're committed to the hand-held camera, this is the way to do it.

Official Site: http://vivariva.com/ Bertrand Tavernier's adaptation of early french novelist Madame de La Fayette's short story is sumptuous and relevant. It's long, and the battle scenes lack the Hollywood / Hong Kong treatment, but it's so gorgeous, and the characters are fascinating: and French! Loved it.
Official Site: http://www.ifcfilms.com/films/the-princess-of-montpensier The visual effects and sound are great, but it's too cold to get past the first hour. Loved seeing the young clone of Jeff Bridges, but that's about it.
Love the cast; (Saoirse Ronan, Eric Bana, Cate Blanchett,) music: The Chemical Brothers and pretty much everything about this movie.
