Jackie Chan has a small role, but this is entirely Andy Lau's Shaolin. High production value, violent, historical kung-fu drama about a warlord's fall and redemption in the temple of Shaolin.
Violent yet beautiful story about a broken old Boer tracking a fugitive seafaring Maori with British troops on their tail. Ray Winstone and Temuera Morrison are perfectly cast in well written roles.
Official Site: http://www.trackerthemovie.com/ Alex Cox (Repo Man, Sid & Nancy) committed Hollywood suicide with this Acid Western. Imagine if The Clash made a movie: this would be it! Joe Strummer did the score to this oddly humorous and subversive historical (1850s) drama about William Walker's failed attempt to rule Nicaragua. Must see for Ed Harris fans.
http://www.alexcox.com/ The last twenty minutes are great: lots of destruction. Vin looks too pumped-up and morose, while Dwayne carries the show. Not much here, but it looks cool...
Strong nationalist theme, heavily processed, ice-cold action packed fantasy. The slimmed-down character VFX is ridiculously inconsistent and distracting. I kept thinking the Red Skull was played by Kevin Bacon...
Official Site: http://captainamerica.marvel.com/ Love the cast; (Saoirse Ronan, Eric Bana, Cate Blanchett,) music: The Chemical Brothers and pretty much everything about this movie.
Official Site: http://hannathemovie.com Smart move for the franchise. Michael Fassbender is a bad ass mofo, and McAvoy is great at placing two fingers to his temple and making me believe that he's reading somebody's mind. Lots of action and effects, the plot zooms along and constantly pounds out the theme of acceptance. Heavy use of the Cold War. Contains obligatory stripper character and lingerie clad hostess scenes.
Official Site: http://www.x-menfirstclassmovie.com/ A young geisha seeks retribution for the murder of her father and battles to carry on the tradition of a powerful double-edged sword tradition. Kick-ass fight scenes, beautiful subjects and photography, brief, imperfect. BTW, a geisha is a woman trained in the arts: not a ho.
The action sequences are fine, but the rest of the film stinks. It's interesting to see Jackie Chan play a grizzled old soldier who wants to be a farmer again, but how many horses have to be tripped and probably seriously injured? Makes True Legend look masterful in comparison.
Yuen Woo Ping is a master of Kung Fu action, and delivers a classic Chinese Wushu story (with strong Nationalistic theme) about the origins of drunken boxing. Lots of wire work and weapons. Gorgeous.
