ONLY GOD FORGIVES

12/6/2013

More nastiness from director Nicolas Winding Refn. It's painful to watch Ryan Gosling sleepwalk through this horrible mess. High camp: pure crap. No no no.

THE CONJURING

12/2/2013

Vera Farmiga, 1970s, exorcism and a haunted house, (forget the BS Salem Witchcraft part of the story.) The setting, art direction, characters and performances will please horror movie lightweights, like me: yes.

GRAVITY

11/8/2013

In 3D: yes! It IS as good as you heard.

STREET KINGS

11/4/2013

Have you ever started watching a DVD and wonder: how the heck did this get in my queue? Halfway through this disaster I realized why: James Ellroy wrote it. Street Kings is no L.A Confidential (or Training Day.)

Yes, yes, yes, YES!

AMOUR

8/23/2013

Michael Haneke's (Caché) highly acclaimed bleak portrait of an aging couple; it's French, and the performances are good, but is it a pleasure to watch? No.

TRANCE

8/21/2013

Danny Boyle directed, violent, nasty dark, psychological thriller vehicle for Rosario Dawson, who is amazing; co-starring James McAvoy and my favorite badassmofo Vincent Cassel: yes.

AWAY FROM HER

8/11/2013

Sarah Polley writes and directs from Alice Munro's short story, a beautiful love story: yes.

KILLING ME SOFTLY

7/29/2013

So many things wrong with this film, it's not even worth the time to complain. The last 60 seconds are the entertaining...

BOY

7/13/2013

Taika Waititi's sweet coming of age dramedy, set in 1984, about a motherless impoverished New Zealand child coping with the return of his absentee / recently paroled father. Beautiful, loved it, but not subtitled and the accents are charming, but dense: put your headphones on for this one!
