One of the saddest chapters in modern human history, the Rape of Nanking, in black and white. A simultaneously horrible and beautiful testament to the depravity of war.
Official Site: http://www.cityoflifeanddeath.co.uk/ Strong nationalist theme, heavily processed, ice-cold action packed fantasy. The slimmed-down character VFX is ridiculously inconsistent and distracting. I kept thinking the Red Skull was played by Kevin Bacon...
Official Site: http://captainamerica.marvel.com/ Bertrand Tavernier's adaptation of early french novelist Madame de La Fayette's short story is sumptuous and relevant. It's long, and the battle scenes lack the Hollywood / Hong Kong treatment, but it's so gorgeous, and the characters are fascinating: and French! Loved it.
Official Site: http://www.ifcfilms.com/films/the-princess-of-montpensier The action sequences are fine, but the rest of the film stinks. It's interesting to see Jackie Chan play a grizzled old soldier who wants to be a farmer again, but how many horses have to be tripped and probably seriously injured? Makes True Legend look masterful in comparison.
More than a heartbreaking documentary about the kidnapping and murder of an Afghan journalist: a rough but perfect example of the mess we've made.
Official Site: http://www.fixerdoc.com/ The technology, morality, legality and ethics of the multi-billion dollar business of robotic drones, and the future of war. Is the CIA developing a robot army? Yikes! Great documentary, not for the easily freaked-out, seeing that you (or our enemies) can DIY for under $300.
Re-make of a classic from Japanese filmmaker Takashi Miike (Ichi the Killer.) Starts slow, but delivers a satisfying ending. Violent, mesmerizing. Okay, yes, I like violent films... somebody please tell me the flaming cattle were CG.

Outstanding portrait of an important artist / photo-journalist and his work.

What a mess... Engaging, violent story of two brothers and a nation torn apart by war. Lots of horrific battle scenes. Too many cuts, but one of best, if not the only film I've seen on the subject.

Colin Farrell: fabulous. One of my favorite mumbler's is audible, thanks in part to Richard King: the best sound man in the world. Use your headphones and/or play it loudly. National Geographic Entertainment; well done, more please!
