OBLIVION

Post apocalypse is a difficult genre. Visually beautiful, worth a view, but overall: no.

HUNGER GAMES

8/21/2012

It takes 67 minutes of exposition to start the games, but Jennifer Lawrence is so watchable, and her character so tough, I almost forgive this ridiculous film!

ATTACK THE BLOCK

1/22/2012

Turn the subtitles on for this slightly funny British sci-fi action fantasy. Aliens attack an inner-city gang of teenagers. Music is good, but I didn't fall in love, or like, any of the characters. Cool 'cause it's from the U.K..

Origins story covers most of the main points of the original, except for why humans are mute in the future. Andy Serkis and the primate animation are expertly integrated into the live action. The next one should be apocalyptic!

THE WARRIOR'S WAY

1/13/2012

Fantasy, Western, Martial Art saga of a swordsman, a baby, a decrepit town of circus freaks, misfits and miscreants. Heavy use of effects, decent cast; including Geoffrey Rush, Kate Bosworth & Dong-Gun Jan. Cool, violent, but sweet and occasionally funny!

THE TEMPEST

12/21/2011

Helen Mirren and Ben Whishaw in an incredibly cool Shakespearean film. Loved it.

No females are in this film! Not for children. Didn't love it.

CAPTAIN AMERICA

10/27/2011

Strong nationalist theme, heavily processed, ice-cold action packed fantasy. The slimmed-down character VFX is ridiculously inconsistent and distracting. I kept thinking the Red Skull was played by Kevin Bacon...

Beautifully photographed ghost story set in 1950s Portugal. Lots of long takes that linger well after the actors have left the frame. Gorgeous, artistic trip back in time to a faraway place.
