DJANGO UNCHAINED

4/17/2013

Christoph Waltz has replaced Uma Thurman as Quintin Tararntino's muse. Violent revenge romancer that's too long, but Jamie Fox is completely bad ass, and it's so campy and over the top I forgive Harvey & company. Nobody can borrow from old films like Tarantino.

Follow a varied handful of horse trainers as they take wild mustangs from the open fields to a competition and auction in the Extreme Mustang Makeover Challenge; it's great: loved it!

SWITCHBACK (1997)

1/24/2012

Danny Glover, Jared Leto, Dennis Quaid, even Walt(on) Goggins are oh so young in this dated  yet entertaining, suspenseful saga about a rouge FBI agent's pursuit of a devious serial killer. Trains and Colorado locations used to maximum. R. Lee Ermey (Full Metal Jacket) seems a bit cliche, but surrender and you'll love him by the end.

THE WARRIOR'S WAY

1/13/2012

Fantasy, Western, Martial Art saga of a swordsman, a baby, a decrepit town of circus freaks, misfits and miscreants. Heavy use of effects, decent cast; including Geoffrey Rush, Kate Bosworth & Dong-Gun Jan. Cool, violent, but sweet and occasionally funny!

WALKER (1987)

11/17/2011

Alex Cox (Repo Man, Sid & Nancy) committed Hollywood suicide with this Acid Western. Imagine if The Clash made a movie: this would be it! Joe Strummer did the score to this oddly humorous and subversive historical (1850s) drama about William Walker's failed attempt to rule Nicaragua. Must see for Ed Harris fans.

RANGO

7/17/2011

Not just for kids, and not for the very young uns. Violent funny western. Great, all the way around: Roger Deakins my favorite DP advised on the lighting.

TRUE GRIT

6/9/2011

Not as visually rich as The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, genius Cinematographer Roger Deakins teams up with the never boring Coen Bros. and a perfect cast to keep the western genre alive. The dialogue feels authentic initially, only to grow tiresome by end: my lone complaint about an otherwise entertaining film.
