CASA DE MI PADRE

11/17/2012

Funny telenovela spoof. I love Will Ferrell, Diego Luna and Gael Garcia Bernal, so yes, see it.

JUAN OF THE DEAD

10/13/2012

Cheeky Cuban zombie movie; think Shawn of the Dead, with more skin, but not as funny.

EXTRATERRESTRIAL

8/31/2012

Low budget Spanish sci-fi comedy, not very funny. Nah...

THE SKIN I LIVE IN

3/13/2012

Almodóvar reunites with Banderas, trades camp for lightweight horror, and sticks with themes of betrayal and sexual identity. Looks and sounds great, but the story is so far-out, and too many rapes. Weird, violent. Didn't love it, but can't stop thinking about it.

ATROCIOUS

11/14/2011

Not a big fan of the pseudo documentary horror genre, but this Spanish film is lite on the gore, suspenseful, and has a great ending. Great idea to give cameras to two characters!

BIUTIFUL

6/2/2011

Alejandro González Iñárritu is a master of dramatizing human pain. Javier Bardem suffers like no other. Dramatic, depressing portrait of a doomed man trying to die with dignity. Long in length, lots of hand-held camera, outstanding performances by Bardem and Maricel Álvarez.

EVEN THE RAIN

5/25/2011

The Global Water Crisis is dramatized in this Spanish film-in-a-film set in Bolivia. Artfully woven story of Christopher Columbus's impact on the native people, the struggles of the the visiting film makers, and the local actors fighting for water and survival.
