ARGO

01/04/2013

Ben Affleck was in danger of being eclipsed by cohort Matt Damon, but Argo helps even out their career trajectories. Mr. Affleck has taken a page out of Robert Mitchem's book and does very little acting, and it really works for him! Love the suspense; the era was beautifully reproduced, my favorite film of 2012, so far...

THE PALM BEACH STORY (1942)
One hundred and fourteen years ago Preston Sturges was born, and film makers of today should study his films cause they're so damn good! Here's three to get you started, or remind you of how sweet it is to have a simple, well-crafted story, interesting characters, humor, and not too much editing, in 90 minutes: thank you!

Funny dark hard-boiled crime comedy written & directed by Shane Black, staring Robert Downey Jr. & Val Kilmer. Adapted from a Brett Halliday, (né Davis Dresser; born in Chicago, died in Santa Barbara, wrote a ton in between) novel. Loved it!

HOLLYWOOD COMPLEX

As a parent of a child who just booked her first theatrical (extra) job, this documentary about young Hollywood hopefuls' is particularly relevant. Explains the frenzy surrounding pilot season. Great characters. Inside look at kids, and the adults who both help them and prey on their dreams of stardom.

SOMEWHERE

Since there are so few female directors, I'm not going to bag on one, rather admire her skill in making unique, somewhat experimental movies. Sofia Coppola brings her lyrical minimalist style (with good music) to a portrait of a successful yet lost young Hollywood actor, who's also a dad. Might mean more to those familiar with the film industry. Cool car, great locations.
