Frivolous lawsuits, tort reform: think it's a homegrown grassroots movement? This film reveals the truth about the corporate attempt, spearheaded by Bush & Rove, to limit citizens legal redress against corporations. Features the story of Jamie Leigh Jones vs. KBR (Haliburton.)

DEVIL'S PLAYGROUND

6/27/2011

Lucy Walker, one of my favorite documentary filmmakers, somehow gained access to the Amish right of passage called Rumspringa, when teens are relieved from the constraints of their religion. (The Amish have an edge on other cultures: they do what's best for the survival of the group.) Brief, evocative and informative look at a sociological phenomenon.

It's rare to find a documentary that's subtitled, a luxury for viewers with napping toddlers.  Must have been somebody young 'cause they spelled Lincoln Park (Chicago) Linkin Park. Comedian Bill Hicks was smart and funny, his story compelling and made possible by a close friend who photographed him at every opportunity. Well done interesting look at a life spent in the stand-up comedy business.

Although produced in 2004, this documentary is relevant today due to the recent renewal of provisions of the Patriot Act. Filmmaker Nonny de la Peña, with help from the ACLU and Robert Greenwald demonstrates with clarity how our Constitution is violated by this ill-named act. You don't have to be a constitutional lawyer or scholar to get it: required viewing!

Just when I'm about to cancel HBO, they trot out this engrossing documentary about chess superstar and possibly schizophrenic Bobby Fisher and his world championship of 1972.  Next up: a documentary about John McEnroe & Bjorn Borg 1980. HBO: how can I let you go?

Fortunately the SLA made a ton of audio recordings which are the backbone of this fascinating even-handed documentary about the abduction of Patricia Hearst. The only way it could be better is if the subject submitted to an interview.  Thoughtful treatment of a significant event at a major turning point in our history.
