Ludivine Sagnier (The Devil's Double,) Kristin Scott Thomas: love them both in this suspenseful French pysch thriller. A remake is already in the works; DePalma: Passion.
Violent, French, and only 76 minutes! Hollywood will remake someday.
http://www.magpictures.com/pointblank/ Kathryn Bigelow launches her career and partners with Monty Montgomery (where is he now?) to introduce Willem Dafoe as a bad ass biker straight out of the clink. Who's more civilized: the gang of leather clad ne'er-do-wells, or the small town folks they annoy? The film looks cool (late 1950s) features the adorable Marin Kanter, great, bikes, cars, art, but... Good first film, not great.
Australian miners tunnel out of the trenches and below enemy lines in this WWI drama. S'okay.
Official Site: http://www.beneathhill60.com.au/ Bleak Danish prison drama with a great performance by Johan Philip Asbæk. Not nearly as good as A Prophet, but worth a view if you can tolerate the violence and oppression.
Hollywood treatment of the Russo-Georgian war, from the Georgian POV. The battle scenes are okay, and it's cool to see Georgia, but the characters are uninteresting. War sucks.
http://www.fivedaysofwar.com/ Dream roles for Dominic Cooper playing both psychopath Uday Hussein and his unwilling double: Latif Yahia. It works! Violent look into the House of Saddam.
http://thedevilsdoublefilm.com/index2.html One of the saddest chapters in modern human history, the Rape of Nanking, in black and white. A simultaneously horrible and beautiful testament to the depravity of war.
Official Site: http://www.cityoflifeanddeath.co.uk/ Anglophiles and gangster film aficionados rejoice; the Brothers Kray, and the women in their violent, criminal lives are finally available for your streaming device. More old school than modern. Not perfect, but still fascinating.
Congolese crime story with Angolan gangsters, nudity, sex and violence. Lots of twists & turns.
