RAMPART

5/16/2012

Writer James Ellroy has made a career of dirty cops, and Woody Harrelson delivers the most compelling characterization of corrupt law enforcement since Russell Crowe's Wendell "Bud" White of L.A. Confidential. From The Messenger (2009) team of Harrelson, Oren Moverman and Ben Foster. Bleak.

Chow Yun-Fat, 1920s China, action, humor. Yes, it's long, but it's good: see it.

HAYWIRE

5/2/2012

Steven Soderbergh has perfected the craft of weaving score and montage, and this slick, trim, 90-minute thriller features a fabulously tough Gina Carano. Loved it!

Louis Malle's tale of a young man, casually rejected by the French Resisitence to German Occupation, who quickly becomes a member of the fascist lackeys; Milice, a paramilitary force, who used torture and murder to round-up Jews and Resistence members. The young lout, Lucien, imposes himself on the family of a Jewish woman whom we falls in love with. Interesting look at a unlikeable main character, and the era. Was controversial at the time 'cause it took the POV of the Fascist. Won the Oscar for best foreign film:1975.

MISS BALA

4/16/2012

It's cold, distant, violent, to arty. Hey, Gerardo Naranjo, if you want anyone to connect with your characters, stop filming the back of their heads.

OUTRAGE (2010)

3/18/2012

"Beat" Takeshi Kitano returns to hardcore yakuza action: lots of violence and brutality. Not a great film but worth it if you love his messed-up face, gangsters and imaginative murders.

THE SKIN I LIVE IN

3/13/2012

Almodóvar reunites with Banderas, trades camp for lightweight horror, and sticks with themes of betrayal and sexual identity. Looks and sounds great, but the story is so far-out, and too many rapes. Weird, violent. Didn't love it, but can't stop thinking about it.

ELITE SQUAD

2/26/2012

Story and characters: better than the sequel. Heavily narrated. Brazilian cops, para-military fascists, drug-dealers and college students in the favelas of Rio prepare for the arrival of the Pope. Lots of yelling & angst, hugely popular, ultra-violent film.

Ultra-violent police procedural set in the world of Rio de Janeiro slums, crooked cops, and politicians. Most of the lines are screamed, the camera is hand held, and the body count is high.

RED RIDING TRILOGY

2/20/2012

British TV series adaptation of David Peace's work, loosely based on the Yorkshire Ripper case. Andrew Garfield stars in the first (and best). Cast includes Sean Bean and Paddy Considine. Dark, violent. Try to view it with subtitles. The flashbacks can be confusing, but it's worth it.
